Japanese passport holders enter the United Kingdom visa-free for up to 6 months as a Standard Visitor. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for the duration of the stay (no 6-month rule, but having at least 6 months validity avoids questions at the border). You cannot work on a Standard Visitor entry, but business meetings, conferences, and academic activities are permitted.
At immigration, the UK uses eGates for Japanese passport holders at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and other major airports. Walk through the eGate with your biometric passport, no queue, no interview. If the eGate kicks you out, a border officer will ask about your travel purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Have your return ticket and hotel booking accessible. No stamp is given through eGates; entry is recorded electronically.
