Tokyo to Stockholm (HND–ARN) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Japanese passport holders enter Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen agreement. No fee, no advance registration. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen zone with one blank page. The upcoming ETIAS system will add a EUR 7 pre-registration, valid for 3 years.

If arriving from another Schengen country, there is no border check. Direct arrivals from Japan clear standard Schengen immigration at Stockholm Arlanda (ARN). Processing is fast for Japanese passport holders. You may be asked about accommodation and return plans but this is rare. The 90-day count applies across all Schengen countries combined.

Direct flights from Tokyo Narita to Stockholm Arlanda run about 11 hours on ANA and SAS (seasonal). Year-round connections route through Helsinki (Finnair, 1 hour to Stockholm), Copenhagen (SAS, 1 hour), or London. Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK), trading at roughly 0.069 SEK per JPY. Cash is nearly extinct in Sweden. Carry a Visa or Mastercard for everything, including street food vendors and public bathrooms. No vaccination requirements. Stockholm's SL Access card for transit costs SEK 20 (the card) plus SEK 42 per single trip or SEK 200 for a 72-hour pass.

Keikyu Line from Shinagawa reaches Haneda in 13 minutes (¥310). Tokyo Monorail from Hamamatsucho takes 15–22 minutes (¥500). Both run frequently from 5am to midnight. Haneda's central location makes it by far the most convenient Tokyo airport.Taxis from central Tokyo cost ¥3,500–5,500 depending on destination and traffic. Limousine buses serve major hotels and stations (¥600–1,100). Ride-shares (GO, S.RIDE) are growing in Japan. The airport is 14km from central Tokyo, significantly closer than Narita.

Arlanda Express (SEK 280–320) to Stockholm Central in 18 minutes. Departures every 15 minutes from platforms in the terminal. The Pendeltåg (SEK 145 including airport supplement) takes 40 minutes and departs from Arlanda Central station, a short walk or free shuttle from the terminals.Taxis to central Stockholm: SEK 600–800. Uber: SEK 400–600. Several rental car brands operate from ARN. Flygbussarna coaches serve Uppsala (1h, SEK 120) and other regional cities. The airport is 45km north of Stockholm.

Subarctic maritime climate. Winters (December–February) are cold at −7–2°C with reliable snowfall. ARN is well-equipped for winter operations with heated jet bridges and continuous de-icing capability, but major snowstorms still cause delays. Daylight is very limited. December averages fewer than 7 hours.

Summers (June–August) are mild and long at 18–24°C with up to 19 hours of daylight. Operations are very stable. Fog can form on calm, clear autumn nights (September–November). Spring snow in April is not unusual. Pack thermal layers for any winter visit.
