Japanese passport holders enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days (single-entry, extended from 15 days in 2023). Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry with two blank pages. A return or onward ticket is required. For stays beyond 45 days, apply for an eVisa at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn costing $25 for a 90-day single-entry stay, processed within 3 business days.

The 45-day visa-free entry is single-entry, meaning if you leave Vietnam (even for a day trip to Cambodia or Laos) and re-enter, you need a new entry. To avoid this, get the eVisa which is also single-entry but allows 90 days. For multiple entries within 90 days, apply for a visa at the Vietnamese Embassy in Tokyo for about JPY 9,000 (single-entry) or JPY 13,500 (multiple-entry). At immigration, you may be asked about your hotel and travel plans.

Direct flights from Tokyo Narita and Haneda to Hanoi (HAN) and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) run about 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours on Vietnam Airlines, ANA, JAL, and Vietjet. Osaka also has direct service. Vietnam uses the Vietnamese dong (VND), trading at roughly 170 VND per JPY. Grab is the primary ride-hail app across Vietnam. Airport to central Hanoi by Grab costs about VND 250,000 to VND 350,000 (roughly JPY 1,500 to JPY 2,100). No mandatory vaccinations.
