Haikou (Meilan) to Toronto (HAK–YYZ) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Chinese passport holders need a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal or at a Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC) in China. The application fee is CAD 100 per person. Processing times vary by location but typically run 20 to 40 business days from Beijing or Shanghai.

You will need a completed application form, digital photo, passport valid for the duration of your stay, proof of funds, travel itinerary, and ties to China (employment letter, property ownership, family). Bank statements covering the last 4 months are expected. Biometrics collection at a VAC is mandatory and costs an additional CAD 85.

Canada issues single-entry and multiple-entry visas. Most applicants now receive a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years, tied to passport expiry. Each stay is limited to 6 months.

Haikou Metro Line 1 connects Meilan International Airport to the city centre in 30–40 minutes for CNY 6–10. The metro runs from roughly 06:30 to 22:30. Airport shuttle buses depart from the central bus station (CNY 15–20). The airport is located about 25 km east of downtown Haikou.DiDi and taxis from the city centre cost CNY 50–90 depending on traffic. Driving via the Haikou Ring Expressway takes 25–40 minutes. Parking is available in the terminal complex.

UP Express from T1 to Union Station runs every 15 minutes (25 min, CAD $12.35). The station is inside T1; take the LINK train from T3 arrivals first (free, 3 min). Taxis to downtown use a meter; expect CAD $55–75.Ride-hail (Uber, Lyft) picks up at the designated Ground Transportation area; follow signs. TTC buses run to the Kipling and Bloor–Yonge subway stations (CAD $3.30) for a longer but cheaper option. Car rental agencies are at T1 and accessible from T3 via the LINK train.

Humid continental climate. Winters are harsh (−10 to −1°C, December–March) with significant snowfall. Pearson closes runways for plowing and de-icing regularly, causing wave delays. Ice storms (freezing rain) are more disruptive than snowfall and can halt operations for hours. Buffalo-effect lake-effect snow can bring heavy accumulations with little warning.

Summers are warm and humid (22–30°C) with afternoon thunderstorms that delay departures July–August. Spring and fall are pleasant but unpredictable. YYZ connections in winter require significant schedule buffer. It is Canada's most weather-disrupted major hub.
