Dublin to Zurich (DUB–ZRH) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Irish passport holders enter Switzerland freely under the EU-Switzerland bilateral agreements. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays for EU/EFTA citizens. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, so passport control applies on arrival. A valid Irish passport or Passport Card is sufficient.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local commune (Gemeinde/commune) within 14 days of arrival. EU citizens need an L permit (short-term, up to 1 year) or B permit (long-term, 5 years, renewable) depending on employment status. The permit fee varies by canton (CHF 50 to CHF 150). Bring proof of employment (a Swiss employment contract is the fastest path), self-employment authorization, or proof of sufficient funds (roughly CHF 21,000 per year) plus health insurance. Swiss health insurance (mandatory for all residents) starts at CHF 300 to CHF 500 per month depending on canton and deductible.

Direct flights from Dublin to Zurich run about 2 hours on Swiss and Aer Lingus. Geneva is about 2 hours 10 minutes. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), trading at roughly 0.92 CHF per EUR 1. Euros are sometimes accepted in tourist areas but at poor rates. No vaccination requirements. Switzerland is expensive: a basic lunch runs CHF 20 to CHF 35, a coffee is CHF 4 to CHF 6. Tipping is not expected (service is included) but rounding up is appreciated.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

SBB trains from the airport station (below Check-in 2) to Zurich HB take 10 minutes and run every 10–15 minutes. Long-distance intercity trains to Geneva, Basel, Bern, and Lucerne depart directly from the airport station; Zurich Airport is one of the best-connected airports in Europe for onward rail travel. Taxis queue outside arrivals; fares to the city centre are CHF 55–75.Rental car desks are located in the arrivals area. Swiss customs exit is prompt for EU/Schengen arrivals. The Meet & Greet area is directly adjacent to baggage reclaim.

Temperate continental climate. Winters (November–February) are cold and frequently foggy on the Swiss Plateau; fog (Hochnebel) can persist for days and is the most common cause of delays, with the airport above the fog layer on clearer days but below it on others. Snow does occur but is well managed. Temperatures range from −2 to 5°C.

Summers (June–August) are warm at 22–28°C with afternoon thunderstorms that can be intense but brief. Spring and autumn are mild and variable. Hochnebel fog season (October–January) is the primary operational risk to plan around.
