Irish passport holders need a visa to enter China. The standard L (tourist) visa costs EUR 126 for single entry and EUR 136 for double entry, processed in 4 working days at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Dublin. Express service (2 to 3 days) costs an additional EUR 25. Rush service (1 day) costs an additional EUR 35. China offers transit visa exemptions of 72 to 144 hours at select airports (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and others) if transiting to a third country, with stays restricted to specific regions.

Required documents include a passport valid for at least 6 months with at least two blank pages, a completed application form with a recent photo (48mm x 33mm, white background), flight itinerary, hotel bookings for the full stay, and proof of sufficient funds (bank statements). An invitation letter is needed for certain visa categories. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly recommended. Biometric fingerprints are collected at the visa center. China periodically announces visa-free trial policies for specific nationalities, so check the embassy website for any current Irish exemptions before applying.

No direct flights connect Dublin to mainland China. Connections through London, Amsterdam, Helsinki, or Istanbul to Beijing or Shanghai take 13 to 18 hours. China uses the renminbi/yuan (CNY), trading at roughly 7.3 CNY per $1. Cash is surprisingly difficult to use in Chinese cities, where WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate. Foreign visitors can now link international credit cards to Alipay for payments. No mandatory vaccinations. VPN software is needed to access Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western social media platforms.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

Metro Line 3 runs from the airport to central Xiamen and Xiamen North Station (high-speed rail hub) in 30–40 minutes for CNY 6–8. Taxis and DiDi are available outside arrivals; fares to the city centre are CNY 40–70. Airport buses serve multiple city destinations and the Wuyuan Bay ferry terminal for CNY 20.

Xiamen North Station connects via high-speed rail to Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. The Gulangyu Island ferry is accessible from the city waterfront via taxi or bus from the airport. Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall.

Subtropical maritime climate. Summers (June–September) are hot and humid at 28–34°C, with the southwest monsoon bringing heavy rainfall and typhoon risk from June through October. Typhoons can close the airport entirely and are the primary operational risk. September is statistically the peak risk month for direct hits.

Winters (December–February) are mild and relatively dry at 12–18°C, among the most pleasant winter climates of any Chinese city. Spring (March–May) is warm but rainy and foggy. Flying conditions are generally excellent outside the typhoon and monsoon season.
