Irish passport holders enter Austria freely as EU citizens. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, so there is passport or ID control on arrival from Ireland, but EU citizens pass through quickly. Bring proof of employment, self-employment, or sufficient resources plus health insurance. A Meldezettel (proof of registration) is the first step and is required for banking, phone contracts, and most administrative tasks.

Direct flights from Dublin to Vienna run about 2 hours 30 minutes on Ryanair and Austrian Airlines. Austria uses the euro. No vaccination requirements. Vienna's public transport pass costs EUR 365 per year (EUR 1 per day). Austrian toll vignettes for motorways cost EUR 9.90 for 10 days. Irish driving licenses are valid for short stays; residents must exchange within 6 months at the local Bezirkshauptmannschaft.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

The S7 commuter rail runs to Wien Mitte in 30–35 minutes (€4.20 every 30 minutes). The CAT (City Airport Train) is faster at 16 minutes (€14.90) and includes a city check-in facility at Wien Mitte.Taxis to the center cost €35–45 metered. Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall. The Vienna City Card covers all S-Bahn travel and is worth buying if you plan to use public transit throughout your stay.

Continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. July and August average 25–30°C with occasional thunderstorms. Winter (December–February) brings temperatures of −5–4°C. Snow and freezing fog are the main disruption risks at VIE, typically causing delays rather than cancellations.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are mild at 10–20°C. Föhn winds in spring can cause turbulence on approaches. Pack layers year-round. Mornings and evenings can be significantly cooler than afternoons.
