Dublin to Munich (DUB–MUC) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Irish passport holders enter Germany freely as EU citizens. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, so passport or ID control applies on arrival from Ireland. A valid Irish passport or Passport Card is sufficient.

For stays beyond 3 months, register your address at the local Burgeramt (citizens's office) within 14 days of moving into accommodation. The Anmeldung (address registration) is free and produces a Meldebestatigung, which is required for opening a bank account, signing contracts, and tax registration. EU citizens do not need a residence permit. Health insurance is mandatory for all residents in Germany, either public (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, starting at roughly 15.9% of gross salary split with employer) or private.

Direct flights from Dublin to Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, and Dusseldorf run 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes on Ryanair, Aer Lingus, and Lufthansa. Germany uses the euro. No vaccination requirements. Germany is more cash-reliant than most Western European countries; many restaurants and smaller shops do not accept cards, so carry EUR 50 to EUR 100. The phrase "Nur Bargeld" or "Keine Kartenzahlung" means cash only. Irish driving licenses are valid for short stays; residents must exchange within 6 months at the local Fahrerlaubnisbehorde.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

S8 S-Bahn to Marienplatz (central Munich) takes 40 minutes (€13.60). S1 offers an alternative route. Both run every 20 minutes, starting from around 4am. The Airport City Day Ticket (€12.80) covers all city zones and is worth buying if making multiple journeys.

Lufthansa Airport Bus to Hauptbahnhof costs €12 (45 min). Taxis to central Munich run €65–80. For Nuremberg, ICE trains run from the airport station via Munich Hauptbahnhof. The terminal complex (T1 and T2) is efficiently laid out with short walks between check-in and gates.

Continental climate at 453m elevation. Winters (December–February) bring regular snowfall and temperatures of −5 to 3°C. The airport is well-equipped for winter operations and rarely closes for snow, but heavy snowfall and black ice cause delays. Munich can be hit by Föhn wind events: a warm alpine wind that reduces visibility and generates turbulence.

Summers are warm (22–28°C) with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. These can be severe enough to ground aircraft temporarily. Spring and fall are pleasant but variable. October is reliably clear and often the best month for connections.
