Doha to Durban (DOH–DUR) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Qatari passport holders enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the date of departure from South Africa with at least two blank pages (South Africa is strict about blank pages and will deny boarding without them). At OR Tambo (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), or Durban King Shaka (DUR), you receive a visitor stamp at immigration.

The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended. For longer stays, apply for a visitor visa at the South African Embassy in Doha before travel. South Africa does not require a return ticket for visa-free entry but airlines may check before boarding. If traveling with children under 18, carry their unabridged birth certificates, as South Africa requires these for minors entering the country.

No direct flights connect Doha to South Africa. Route through Dubai (8 hours to Johannesburg on Emirates), Addis Ababa (6 hours on Ethiopian Airlines), or Istanbul (10 hours on Turkish Airlines). Qatar Airways has operated Doha to Johannesburg via stops. Total travel time from Doha runs 9 to 15 hours. South Africa uses the South African rand (ZAR), trading at roughly 5.10 ZAR per QAR 1. Card payments work everywhere in cities. ATMs are widespread. No mandatory vaccinations, but yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country. The Gautrain connects OR Tambo to Johannesburg and Pretoria at ZAR 185 (about QAR 36). Uber operates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other cities.

Doha Metro Gold Line connects the city center directly to Hamad International; the Hamad International Airport station is at the terminal (15–20 min from Al Bidda / West Bay area, QAR 3–6). Metro runs 6am–11pm Sunday–Wednesday, until midnight Thursday, and 2pm–1am Friday. The Gold Line also connects to the Red and Green lines at Msheireb station for wider coverage.Taxis from West Bay / downtown Doha cost QAR 30–50 and take 15–25 minutes. Karwa taxis are metered and more regulated than informal options. Ride-hail apps (Careem, Uber) operate widely in Doha.
