St John is two-thirds Virgin Islands National Park, with Trunk Bay beach and hiking trails through tropical forest. St Croix, the largest island, has the Christiansted and Frederiksted historic districts (both formerly Danish colonial), Buck Island Reef National Monument, and a growing craft rum scene. Ferries from Red Hook, St Thomas reach Cruz Bay, St John in 20 minutes for $7.50 each way.
Direct flights from Miami (MIA) to St Thomas run about 2 hours 45 minutes on American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit. New York JFK to STT runs about 3 hours 45 minutes. Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, and Dallas also have nonstop service. St Croix (STX) has direct flights from Miami and select other cities. The USVI uses US currency, US postal service, and US cell phone coverage (confirm with your carrier). No currency exchange is needed. Card payments work widely. Vitran public buses run on St Thomas and St Croix for $1 per ride. Open-air safari taxis (converted trucks with bench seating) are the main shared transport on St Thomas at $2 to $4 per person.
