Getting to CAN

Metro Line 3 North Extension runs directly to T1 and T2 from Tianhe and the city centre (30–40 min from Guangzhou East station, ¥8–10). Road traffic in Guangzhou is consistently heavy; the metro avoids it.Airport shuttle buses depart from multiple city zones including the Civil Aviation ticket office in Liuhua (¥26, 40–60 min). Taxis cost ¥80–130 from the urban core and take 40–70 minutes depending on which ring road is moving. DiDi is cheaper and widely used.

Getting from PEK

Airport Express to Dongzhimen takes 16 minutes (¥25) and connects to Metro Lines 2 and 13 for central Beijing. Running 6am to 11pm from T2 and T3. It bypasses road congestion regardless of traffic conditions.Taxis use the meter; central Beijing runs ¥80–120 from the airport. Didi ride-hailing is available and widely used. Airport express buses (¥25–30) serve multiple city zones. T3 (international hub) and T2 are connected by a free inter-terminal bus if not airside. Note: Beijing has two airports; Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) are not connected by convenient transport.

Beijing Climate

Humid continental climate with cold, dry winters (−8 to 2°C) and hot summers (28–35°C). The primary flight disruption risks are winter fog and smog (November–February, heavily air quality-dependent), summer thunderstorms (July–August), and spring sandstorms from the Gobi Desert (March–May) that can reduce visibility rapidly.

Fall (September–October) brings clear skies and minimal disruptions. The 2022 Winter Olympics improved Beijing's snowfall preparedness. Fog and smog remain serious delay causes through winter.

Route data is updated regularly from official airline schedules. On-time performance data comes from recent airport delay snapshots.
China Southern, Air China, and several other carriers operate CAN-PEK (or CAN-PKX to Beijing Daxing). Combined, expect 15 to 20 daily nonstop departures to both Beijing airports. China Southern has the highest frequency from its Guangzhou hub. Block time is about 3 hours 10 minutes over 1,880 km.
China Southern moved most of its Beijing operations to Daxing (PKX) when that airport opened. Air China continues to use Beijing Capital (PEK). Hainan Airlines also flies to PEK. Check which Beijing airport your flight uses before booking ground transport or connections. The two airports are 70 km apart on opposite sides of the city.
The high-speed rail takes about 8 hours on the fastest G-train service between Guangzhou South and Beijing West. Flying takes 3 hours gate-to-gate plus airport time on each end. For city-center-to-city-center travel, the train takes roughly twice as long but avoids airport overhead. The train is popular for travelers who prefer daytime productivity or dislike flying. The sleeper train option takes about 20 hours and runs overnight.
Terminal 2 at Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) handles China Southern and its SkyTeam partners. Terminal 1 handles most other domestic carriers. CAN opened Terminal 2 in 2018 and it is significantly larger and more modern than Terminal 1. An automated people mover connects the two terminals but it adds 15 to 20 minutes, so confirm your terminal before arriving.

Guangzhou to Beijing: China's North-South Trunk Route

CAN-PEK is one of the busiest domestic air corridors in the world. It links southern China's commercial capital to the national capital, spanning 1,880 km. China Southern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines are the primary operators, combining for 15 to 20 daily nonstop departures. Block time is about 3 hours 10 minutes. China Southern dominates from its Guangzhou Baiyun hub, while Air China anchors the Beijing end. The route competes directly with high-speed rail, which covers the same city pair in about 8 hours but avoids all airport processing time.

Beijing's Two-Airport System

Beijing's split between Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) airports is the most important operational detail for CAN-PEK travelers. China Southern and most SkyTeam carriers use Daxing, which is south of the city and connected by metro and expressway. Air China and Star Alliance carriers use Capital, which is northeast of the city center on the older Airport Express metro line. The two airports are 70 km apart. Mixing them up means a 90-minute taxi ride to fix the mistake. Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) is a single-campus airport with two terminals connected by shuttle, making the origin side less complicated. The route carries a large share of government and state-enterprise business traffic alongside commercial and personal travel.
