Hungarian passport holders enter Italy freely as EU and Schengen citizens. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays. A valid Hungarian national ID card or passport is sufficient. Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so flights between them operate with no border control.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local Anagrafe (civil registry office) for residency. EU citizens must also apply for a Certificato di Iscrizione Anagrafica at the local Comune, which is free or costs a small administrative fee (EUR 16 bollo stamp). Bring proof of employment or self-employment, or proof of sufficient resources (roughly EUR 6,000 per year for a single person) plus health insurance. An Italian fiscal code (codice fiscale) from the Agenzia delle Entrate is needed for any contract, SIM card, or bank account.

Direct flights from Budapest to Rome run about 1 hour 50 minutes on Wizz Air and Ryanair. Milan is about 1 hour 40 minutes. Seasonal routes cover Naples, Catania, Bari, Venice, Bologna, and Palermo. Italy uses the euro. No vaccination requirements. Hungarian driving licenses are valid for short stays; residents must convert to an Italian license at the local Motorizzazione within 1 year. Italian bureaucracy is notoriously slow, so expect multi-week waits for codice fiscale and residency appointments in larger cities.

Malpensa Express trains depart Terminal 1 every 30 minutes to Milano Cadorna (45 min, €13) and Milano Centrale (52 min, €13). Terminal 2 passengers must take the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the train. Taxis from Terminal 1 charge a fixed rate of around €100 to central Milan; pre-booked private transfers can be slightly cheaper.

Rental car desks are located in Terminal 1's arrivals area with a separate multi-storey car park. The A8 and A26 motorways give good access to the broader Lombardy and Piedmont regions.

Humid subtropical/continental climate on the Po Plain. Summers (June–August) are hot and muggy at 28–34°C, with afternoon thunderstorms that can produce short but sharp ground delays. Winters (November–February) are cold, damp, and foggy at 0–7°C. Fog is the most significant disruption risk and can persist for days, causing diversions to Turin or Bergamo.

Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant but bring variable rain. Po Valley fog is notoriously dense. Check conditions carefully for November through January travel.
