Budapest to Maastricht (BUD–MST) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Hungarian passport holders enter the Netherlands freely as EU and Schengen citizens. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays. A valid Hungarian national ID card or passport is sufficient. Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so flights between them have no border control.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local municipality (gemeente) to obtain a BSN (Burgerservicenummer), which is required for employment, banking, healthcare, and renting. Registration is free and done by appointment at the town hall. Bring proof of address (rental contract), a valid ID, and a birth certificate with apostille. EU citizens do not need a residence permit or work permit. Health insurance is mandatory for residents, starting at roughly EUR 130 per month for the basic package.

Direct flights from Budapest to Amsterdam run about 2 hours 20 minutes on Wizz Air and KLM. The Netherlands uses the euro. No vaccination requirements. Dutch cities are built for cycling, and buying a used bike (EUR 50 to EUR 150) is cheaper than public transport for daily use. Hungarian driving licenses are valid for short stays; residents must exchange within 185 days at the RDW.
