Japanese passport holders enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days (extended from 30 days in 2024). No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry with one blank page. A return or onward ticket within 60 days is required. At immigration, you may be asked to show proof of funds (THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family equivalent in any currency), though enforcement is rare for Japanese nationals.

Extensions of 30 additional days (total 90 days) are available at any Thai Immigration office for THB 1,900. Fill out the TM.7 form and bring a passport photo. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th can be completed before arrival but is not mandatory. For stays beyond 90 days, apply for a 60-day Tourist Visa (TR) at the Thai Embassy in Tokyo for JPY 9,000 before departure, extendable by another 30 days in-country.

Direct flights from Tokyo Narita and Haneda to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) run about 6 hours 30 minutes on Thai Airways, ANA, JAL, and several low-cost carriers including Zipair and Thai AirAsia X. Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo also have direct service. Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB), trading at roughly 0.23 THB per JPY. Airport Rail Link from BKK to central Bangkok takes 30 minutes for THB 45. No vaccination requirements. Grab is the ride-hail app of choice.

Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in 30 minutes (฿45). Runs 6am to midnight. Connect to BTS Skytrain at Phaya Thai for onward travel to Sukhumvit, Silom, or Siam.Taxis from the arrivals level are metered; add the ฿50 airport surcharge and expressway tolls to the meter reading. Total to central Bangkok typically ฿300–450. Grab is reliable and avoids negotiation. Limousine services (฿800–1,500) are available from the arrival hall. Buses are cheap but slow given Bangkok's traffic.

Tropical monsoon climate. Hot season (March–May) reaches 38–40°C with high humidity. Wet season (May–October) brings daily heavy rains and occasional flooding. Thunderstorms cause flight delays regularly. Suvarnabhumi sits in a flood-prone area east of Bangkok. The 2011 floods came close to the airport perimeter.

Cool season (November–February) is the most comfortable for travel (25–32°C) with lower humidity and good flying weather. Haze from agricultural burning occasionally reduces visibility in March–April.
