Amsterdam to Timişoara (AMS–TSR) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Romania freely as EU citizens. No visa, no time limit on stays. A valid passport or Dutch national ID card is enough. Romania joined the Schengen air zone in March 2024, so flights from Schengen countries including the Netherlands no longer go through passport control. Land border checks still apply at Romania's non-Schengen borders with Moldova, Ukraine, and Serbia.

Direct flights from Amsterdam to Bucharest Henri Coanda (OTP) take about 3 hours on KLM and TAROM. Wizz Air and Transavia serve the route from Eindhoven as well. Bucharest has a second airport, Baneasa (BBU), but most international traffic goes through OTP. Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) and Timisoara (TSR) also have direct connections to Dutch airports via low-cost carriers.

Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON), trading at roughly 5.0 RON per EUR 1. Card payments are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for rural areas, markets, and smaller restaurants. No mandatory vaccinations. For stays beyond 90 days, register with the local immigration office (IGI) within 30 days to get a registration certificate as an EU citizen. The fee is about RON 29.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.
