Amsterdam to Sepang (AMS–KUL) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. Complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my within 3 days before arrival. This replaced the physical arrival card in 2023. No return ticket is formally required, but airlines may check before boarding.

At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), go through the standard immigration counter. Biometrics (fingerprints) are taken at the counter. The 90-day period covers Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak combined, but note that Sabah and Sarawak control their own immigration. You get a separate stamp when crossing from Peninsular Malaysia into either Bornean state, and the 90-day clock does not reset.

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Kuala Lumpur run about 12 hours on KLM and Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia uses the Malaysian ringgit (MYR), trading at roughly 4.9 MYR per EUR 1. Card payments work at malls and chain restaurants. Hawker stalls and markets are cash-only. ATMs are everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. The KLIA Ekspres train from KUL to KL Sentral takes 28 minutes and costs MYR 55 (about EUR 11). Touch 'n Go eWallet is widely used for payments and transit. Grab (ride-hailing) is the standard for taxis and food delivery. KL is 7 hours ahead of the Netherlands in summer, 6 hours in winter.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral takes 28 minutes (RM55). KLIA Transit is slower but cheaper if you're stopping at intermediate stations. Both depart from the basement of the main terminal. KLIA2 (AirAsia) has its own station on the same line.

Taxis from KLIA to central KL cost RM70–100 using the fixed-rate coupon system at the taxi counter (avoid unlicensed touts). Grab is available and typically cheaper. Long-distance buses connect to Singapore and other Malaysian cities from both KLIA and KLIA2.

Equatorial rainforest climate, hot (28–34°C) and humid year-round with no true dry season. Rain can fall any month, though two monsoon seasons (Northeast: November–March; Southwest: May–September) bring heavier precipitation. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent year-round and cause the most common flight delays.

Haze from Indonesian forest fires is a recurring issue August–October and occasionally reduces visibility enough to affect operations. Unlike typhoon zones farther north, KUL is not at direct tropical cyclone risk. Operations are generally consistent year-round.
