Amsterdam to Kimberley (AMS–KIM) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no pre-registration. Passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond departure from South Africa and have at least two blank pages (South Africa is strict about this, they will deny boarding without blank pages). You need a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds.

KLM flies direct from Amsterdam to Cape Town (CPT) in about 11 hours 30 minutes and to Johannesburg (JNB) in about 10 hours 45 minutes. South African Airways also operates the Johannesburg route. From JNB, the Gautrain runs to Sandton (15 minutes, ZAR 195) and Pretoria (40 minutes, ZAR 250). From CPT, the MyCiTi bus connects the airport to the city center for about ZAR 120.

South Africa uses the South African rand (ZAR), trading at roughly 20 ZAR per EUR 1. Card payments work at most businesses in cities. ATMs are widely available but use indoor ATMs at banks or shopping malls for safety. No mandatory vaccinations for visitors from the Netherlands. Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country (this includes transiting through a yellow fever country for more than 12 hours). Malaria prophylaxis is advised for Kruger National Park and Limpopo province. Driving is on the left side of the road.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.
