Dutch passport holders need an e-visa for Turkey. Get it at evisa.gov.tr before departure. The e-visa costs USD 51.50 (about EUR 48), allows multiple entries within 180 days, and each stay can be up to 90 days. Processing is instant after online payment. You can also apply at the Turkish consulate in the Netherlands, but the e-visa is faster. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry.
Direct flights from Amsterdam to Istanbul (IST) take about 3 hours 30 minutes on KLM, Turkish Airlines, and Pegasus. Transavia and Corendon fly to Antalya (AYT), Izmir (ADB), Dalaman (DLM), and Bodrum (BJV) seasonally. Turkish Airlines' hub at IST makes it a natural connection point with excellent onward connections across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Turkey uses the Turkish lira (TRY). The exchange rate moves frequently, so check before departure. As a rough guide, EUR 1 buys about 35 to 38 TRY (2026 range). Card payments work in cities, but smaller shops, taxis, and market vendors often prefer cash. ATMs (look for Garanti, Isbank, or Akbank) are everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. Istanbul's new airport (IST) connects to the city via the Havaist bus service (TRY 140, about 45 to 75 minutes to Taksim). The metro extension to the airport is also now operational.
Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.
Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.
