When it's 6:00 PM in Amsterdam, it's 1:00 AM (next day) in Sapporo.
Dutch passport holders enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Complete the Visit Japan Web form (vjw.digital.go.jp) before arrival to register your immigration, customs, and quarantine information online. This generates QR codes that speed up processing at the airport.
At Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), or any Japanese airport, go through the standard immigration counter. Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the counter. The 90-day stay is non-extendable under the visa-free arrangement (unlike a proper tourist visa). For longer stays, apply at the Japanese Embassy in The Hague before departure. Japan has a bilateral agreement with the Netherlands dating to 1912 that underpins the visa-free arrangement.
Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Tokyo Narita run about 11 hours 30 minutes on KLM and Japan Airlines (codeshare partners). KLM also flies to Osaka Kansai direct (about 11 hours 45 minutes). Japan uses the Japanese yen (JPY), trading at roughly 165 JPY per EUR 1. Cash is still important in Japan, as many smaller restaurants and shops do not accept cards. 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards reliably. The Japan Rail Pass (7-day from JPY 50,000, about EUR 303) covers unlimited bullet train and JR local train travel. Buy it before departure or at major JR stations. Suica/Pasmo IC cards work on all urban transit and most convenience stores.
Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.
Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.
