Ethiopian passport holders need a visa to enter South Africa. Apply at the South African embassy in Addis Ababa or through the VFS Global center. The tourist visa allows stays up to 90 days and costs no fee for the visa itself, but VFS charges a service fee of about USD 28. Processing takes 5 to 10 business days, sometimes longer.

Required documents include a completed BI-84 application form, a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure from South Africa with at least 2 blank pages, a recent passport photo, proof of sufficient funds (bank statements), return flight booking, proof of accommodation, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. South Africa requires the ICVP for travelers arriving from Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Airlines flies direct from Addis Ababa to Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo), about 6 hours. South Africa requires at least 2 blank visa pages (not endorsement pages) in your passport at entry. If you do not have them, you will be turned away at the gate or on arrival. South African rand (ZAR) is the currency. ATMs are everywhere in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
