US passport holders enter Greenland visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark but is not part of the Schengen area or the EU. US citizens do not need a Schengen visa for Greenland. A new international airport in Nuuk is under construction with a longer runway planned to open in 2026, which will enable direct transatlantic flights. Total travel time from the US East Coast runs 10 to 16 hours. Greenland uses the Danish krone (DKK), trading at roughly 7 DKK per $1. Card payments work in towns. Prices are high: a restaurant meal costs DKK 200 to DKK 400 ($29 to $57). Bring warm layers year-round: summer temperatures in July average 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.
