At Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza (TIA), immigration is fast. Albania is not part of the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa is not required. The country uses its own immigration system. US citizens are among the most welcome visitors, and the Albanian Riviera has become a top destination for American travelers in recent years. No registration with local authorities is needed.
No US carriers operate direct flights to Albania. Route through Istanbul (about 1 hour 45 minutes to Tirana on Turkish Airlines), Rome (about 1 hour 30 minutes), or Athens (about 1 hour). Total travel time from the US East Coast runs 12 to 16 hours. Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL), trading at roughly 95 ALL per $1. Card payments work at hotels, restaurants, and shops in Tirana. Outside the capital, carry cash. ATMs are available in all cities. A coffee in Tirana costs ALL 100 to ALL 200 (about $1 to $2). The Tirana to Saranda bus takes about 5 hours and costs ALL 2,000 (about $21).
