A return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation are required. At Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) near Georgetown, immigration stamps your passport after reviewing your documents.

The 30-day stay can be extended at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Georgetown for up to 6 months total. Each extension costs GYD 10,000 (about $48). Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. Georgetown's wooden colonial architecture, the Demerara Harbour Bridge, and Kaieteur Falls (one of the world's tallest single-drop waterfalls at 226 meters) are the primary attractions. Kaieteur is reachable by charter flight from Georgetown in about 1 hour.

Direct flights from Miami (MIA) to Georgetown run about 5 hours on Caribbean Airlines. New York JFK to Georgetown runs about 5 hours 30 minutes on JetBlue and Caribbean Airlines. Guyana uses the Guyanese dollar (GYD), trading at roughly 209 GYD per $1. US dollars are widely accepted, especially in Georgetown and at hotels. ATMs dispense GYD. Card payments work at hotels and larger restaurants but cash is king at markets and street vendors. Minibuses are the main public transport in Georgetown at GYD 100 to GYD 300 per ride ($0.50 to $1.50). Interior travel to the rainforest and savannahs relies on small aircraft and river boats.
